A Magical Spring Cleaning Spell
As spring begins to emerge at last in the Western Hemisphere, signs of renewal and rebirth are all around us. Trees are beginning to sprout their leaves, and the first of the wildflowers have begun to bloom. Bees and birds are beginning to awaken from their winter slumber and are hard at work preparing themselves for the lively season ahead.
If we pause to listen we can almost hear the earth begin to awaken all around us, and our own energy might begin to align with the renewal. In order to create space for all that is to come, and to be ready for all of the creation and abundance that is available to us, it is important to first let go of what no longer serves us, and to cleanse ourselves and our spaces of stagnant energy.
March, and particularly the upcoming full Worm Moon in Virgo, is the perfect time to perform rituals of letting go, and magically removing blockages and obstacles that no longer serve us. Basically, we want to perform a magical spring cleaning of our spirits and our spaces.
The month of March is named for the Warrior God Mars, and it is often a time of wildness, internally and externally. The weather is all over the place, switching between sunny days and storms and it is also the month that contains the Spring Equinox, known as Ostara in many modern traditions. This is the prime month to plant seeds for an abundant year.
The first step to performing your magical spring cleaning is to gather your supplies. For this ritual you will only need a few special items.
Supplies
A glass jar or bottle with a lid
Water from a natural running source like a river, stream, or spring
Sea salt
Step One:
For the first step of this ritual, place several tablespoons of Sea salt into your glass jar or bottle. As you do so, consider the sacred element of Earth. The upcoming March Full Moon is in the sign of Virgo this year, so Earth energy is certainly abundant. Embrace your own earthy ways as you perform this step, and create an intention of grounding yourself in gratitude for the abundance in your own life.
Step Two:
Next you will want to place your jar in the sunshine. As you do so, express gratitude for the light of the Sun, fire, and its power of purification and cleansing. Leave your jar in the sun and moonlight for 3 days.
Step Three:
On the third day, take the jar with you to the water source of your choosing. This can be a river, a stream, or a spring. The main thing you want is a natural water source that is moving and flowing. If you can, choose a water source that is as pure and natural as possible. If you live in a city, you may have to travel a little ways to find a source that is pure and away from man-made pollutants.
In several traditions, March is known as a time to honor holy wells and sacred springs. Some well known sacred springs have been around for hundreds and even thousands of years. Water is life, and all water is extremely sacred, and a necessary item in most magical traditions. This ritual involves gathering water from a natural source to use for your spellwork, so make sure that you do so with reverence, respect, and gratitude for this important element.
Gently dip your jar into the water source and fill it up. Once full, cap it tightly. You may choose to perform a brief meditation at the water source, or sprinkle some dried flowers or herbs into the flow as an offering.
Step Four:
When you get home, you can begin the ritual itself. You may want to couple this ritual with more traditional spring cleanings or perform it after you have purged your home of items and belongings that no longer serve you. Remember to donate to a local shelter if possible! Or simply offer up items you no longer need to friends and family. Something that has become stagnant for you, may be just what a neighbor or friend is looking for!
Once you’re home, sweep your home in a counter-clockwise pattern to remove negatively any energy that has become stuck. When you’ve finished you can open your jar of sun charged sacred water, and begin to sprinkle it around the doors and windows of your home.
As you sprinkle the water, you may choose to repeat a mantra or a spell. Something like, “Thank you Sacred Water, for blessing this home and all who live here, for cleansing and clearing this space of negative energy, and for purifying for the year ahead.”
You’ll be amazed at how wonderful your home feels after this magical spring cleaning spell. After you’re finished, light some candles or some incense, and sit back and relax. You’ve created the perfect space for all of the creation and abundance in the season ahead.
