Scrying: Using incense/smoke as a divination tool

The more you use divination practices and interact with Spirit, you will likely notice that divining is not something that you turn on and off. Depending on who you ask, you can divine using just about anything. Smoke is no exception. If you have incense (or another source of smoke, ahem) you can do what’s called scrying, which is studying the patterns of smoke for divine messages. Many things can be used to scry, but smoke scrying is a practice of its very own.

Light the incense, and when the flame extinguishes, examine the patterns that the rising smoke makes. If you are unsure of your connection with the smoke, you can test it by staring at the incense and then directing your gaze anywhere from a foot to about three feet above the incense. It may take a second, but you can see the smoke direct itself to where your gaze directs. When you break your concentration, the smoke will likely break its stream. This should make you feel comfortable that you are, in fact, calibrated with the energy of the smoke you divine from.

Let your eyes wander through the smoke and let your gaze be light and flowy. Pay attention to the shapes that the smoke makes, the willows, the swirls, the spindles. Watch where it directs itself, pay attention to the images that pop up in your mind, your peripheries, and where the smoke naturally directs itself. The experience takes a lot of practice, and is more energetic than direct, so give yourself lots of practice. This is only a small introduction, but with time, dedication, and some research, scrying can become a wonderful tool in your divination toolbox.
